MOVIE REVIEW: Oz the great and powerful (2013)
Plot
Everyone knows the classic story "The wizzard of OZ". This movie I am about to give my toughts on from 2013, Oz the great and powerful is a prequel to this beloved story and film. This time we find Oscar in the circus as a egocentric crook of a medician calling him self the wizard of OZ. But OZ does not refer to the land of OZ but to his first name OZ. And I'm afraid I can't say I feel sympathy for 'OZ'. Has It stayed throughout the entire movie?
The first scene, the one I briefly described prior to this sentence, is properly one of the strongest scenes artistically. It is presented in a 4:3 and in Black and White. Yes Lady's and gentlemen, this is the most artistic scene you'll find in the entire movie. In my humble opinion at least. But not my favorite scene, but more about that later.
At the end of the opening scene Oz finds him self in a hot air balloon and in a very heavy storm. Ones the storm clears up, Oz stops hiding and we meat the land of Oz and the movie goes to the normal ratio and in color.
3D, A gimmick or a feature?
I have seen this movie in 3D, and I am glad to say that the extra money was well spend. The 3D really works. What first seems a gimmick later proves to be an added feature to the movie. If you consider seeing this movie I advice to see it in 3D.
The execution
This is where the movie starts to show its cracks. Lets start with the acting shall we?
Acting
Oz, is played by James Franco and lets just say his preformance is so so. Its not horible, don't get me wrong. But its not constant. Its like this, at the start of a shooting day, Mr. Franco needs to get started and is a little rusty. This shows. But when he gets in the ritme of shooting he starts to preform as expected. And you can almost guess what scenes where shot at the beginning of a day, and which later in the day.
Theodora, is played by the lovely looking Mila Kunis. What do I like about her? Theodora is a very interesting and that potential, but Mila didn't deliver.
Evanora, played by Rachel Weisz did what she could and is maybe the best delivered preformance of the 3 witches.
Annie, Is played by Michelle Williams, aldo the only had one scene in the movie, it was the best scene of Williams in the movie. Yes, Williams also played Glinda, the Good Witch. But here she played very woody.
Joey King also played 2 parts in this movie. The first is a Girl in Wheelchair and she also voiced China Girl. And I have to say she delivered the strongest performance of all.
You also have Knuck played By Tony Cox and I have to say for the small part he did a great job.
To be clear the 'references' to the character he played are not on purpose.
The visuals
Like I said before, the 3D really helps the movie. The scenery is also quiet good, but does remember us of 'Alice in Wonderland' of a few years back. No wonder because both features are from the House of the Mouse, Disney.
Like you saw i said the scenery is quiet good, this I said because its canibalised by the poor post production, it is so clear over 90% is green screen, And I would not have minded if they at least tried to do it good. But there is one scene concerning China girl and Evanora that is so bad, that it is as if a trainee did it. Or maybe its not the CG-department to blame but:
The director
This movie dis directed by Sam Raimi, the same men who brought us Spiderman 3. Everyone knows what a promise that movie had, but Raimi f**ked it up. The direction is like a cook who makes you a pizza pomodoro if you ordered a pizza margarita. The bread and tomatoes are there but the rest of the topping is missing.
In Conclusion

Oz the Great and Powerful had great promise, but failed to deliver.
I give it:
